I chose to compose a popular song and before I started composing I listened to songs by Adele and ed Sheeran, I liked the way these songs told part of their life story through one verse.I brainstormed ideas and decided that I wanted to compose a song of a girls life and how she wanted to go away for a while. And how she felt, I picked a lot of words to compose a song from but my strongest one was the idea that this girl wanted to move away and start fresh and she had to catch an early train, she felt she was alone and icolated and had no one to talk to and that if she went away she would be able to have a better life and move on. I composed my lyrics first, I started with the chorus because I wanted it to be one of the strongest parts, I came up with
' its time to go,
all i do is think about it,
its time to go
and that's all I need to know'
I felt that this showed how strongly she hated her life and how sick and tired she was of it, she really didn't want to be in this place anymore, and then the train station and how she wanted to leave early to go came into my head and I just started composing more and more lyrics. After I had written some lyrics we had to sort it into verses and a chorus, after I'd done that I started looking at the chords and I wanted something that sounded meaningfull.
I picked out the chords Am,Em,Dm,f and G I played around with them and came up with Am Em Dm and F for my verse. For my chorus I decided to make the chords slightly faster but I used the same chords and added a G so it sounded meaningful.
I played them in arpeggio style on the piano because this gave a sense of movement. And because my song was to describe how the girl felt,I always thought it would be hard to compose a song but once i started playing chords and brainstorming ideas it was all straight forward from then onwards.
I wanted to work out the tuning of how my song would sound, so i started by recording the Piano part first and humming the lyrics to see how it fitted. I done it a couple of times and it sounded good so i decided on how i wanted the melody to be sung. I knew from the start that i wanted drumming so i spoke to a drummer within the group and showed him in slow motion on the drum kit how i wanted it to sound and then i played the piano part while he fitted the drum part with it. I decided i didn't want any guitar in my composition.
When i started to hum the tuning of how the song was going to sound I had to swap some things around in the second verse so it all fitted nicely and sounded meaningful and strong.
From the start of composing my song i knew i wanted someone to sing it who had a quiet voice quite gentle to so show emotion throughout the song.
